1. What is Media?
Media is a means of communication channels. The word media comes from
Latin which is the plural of the word medium. In
literally, media means intermediaries, namely intermediaries between the sources of the message(a source) by receiving a message (a receiver). Some things are
including into the media are films, television, diagrams, print media
(printed material), computer, and so on. 1
Media is a tool that can assist in necessity
and activities, which can make it easier for whom
only take advantage of it.
More specifically, the notion of media in the teaching process is trendy
interpreted as physical, photographic, or electronic devices for
capture, process, and rearrange visual information or
verbal. 2 The existence of media is felt to be very helpful in the learning process
teach, this is because the teacher will be easy in activities
teaching and can increase student attention to activities
learn it.
According to the National Association of Peniikan (Natinal Education
Association / NEA) in the book Arief Sadiman, et al, the media are
of communication both printed and audiovisual as well the crockery. Media should not be manipulated, it can
seen, heard and read. The limitation is that of the media
is anything that can be used to channel
message from sender to receiver so as to stimulate
thoughts, feelings, concerns and interests and concerns of students
such that the learning process occurs.3 In learning activities, media can be defined as
something that can carry information and knowledge within
ongoing interaction between educators and students. 4 In learning activities, the media can be defined as
something that can be used as a means of channeling communication and
message. In teaching and learning activities, media is something
which is very good and useful, where as something can
be a communication link between teachers and students.
2. Roles of Media
Initially, the media only functioned as an internal tool
teaching and learning activities, namely in the form of means that can provide
visual experiences to students in order to encourage motivation
learning and learning achievement clarify and simplify concepts
complex and abstract becomes simpler, more concrete as well easy to understand.13 Thus, it can function to
enhance absorption and reference to the material
learning and teaching media can be made more attractive.
Basyirudin Usman and Asnawir, explained the function of the media
teaching in the student learning process as follows: 14
a) Helps make learning easier for students and helps
make teaching easier for teachers.
b) Provide a more real experience (which abstract can be
concrete).
c) Attract students more attention (the course of the lesson is not
boring).
d) All of the student's senses can be activated, the weakness of one of the senses can be
balanced by the power of the other senses.
e) More attention and interest in learning.
f) Can generate a world of theory with reality.
Suwana, et al, argue that the benefits of learning media
is:
1) The delivery of learning materials can be uniform.
2) The learning process becomes more interesting
3) The learning process becomes more interactive
4) The amount of teaching and learning time can be reduced.
5) The quality of learning can be improved
6) The learning process can occur anywhere and anytime.
7) A positive attitude towards the learning process can be improved.
8) The role of the teacher can change to a more positive and productive direction.
Thus, the media is very helpful for teachers
convey learning to achieve the desired goals
achieved to the maximum
3. Methods
Quite a few types and forms of media are known
today, from simple to high-tech, from
which is easy and already exists naturally to the medium
must be designed by the teacher himself.
Judging from its type, the media is divided into auditive media,
visual, and audiovisual. Auditive media is media only
rely on voice capabilities alone, such as radio, cassete recorder, vinyl record. This visual media is displaying an image or
symbols that move like a film strip (film series), photo images
or paintings, prints. There are also visuals that display images or
symbols that move like mute, cartoon movies. Meanwhile, the media
Audio visual is a medium that has sound and element characteristics
picture. This type of meia has a better ability because
includes both the first and the second media types.
Audio-visual media consists of silent visual audiences, namely media
which displays sound and still images like a sound-frame movie
(sound slides), sound sequencing films. 5 Motion audio, namely media
can display sound unsu and moving images like movies
sound and video cassette.
In terms of the situation, audio-visual media is divided into
pure visual audiences, namely sound and image elements derived from
a source such as a film audio-cassette. visual audiences are not
pure i.e. sound and picture elements from different sources,
for example a sound frame film whose image elements come from
slide projector and sound elements sourced from recorder type. 6
Judging from its coverage, the media is divided into 2 (two), namely
first, media with broad and simultaneous folding. Use
This media is not limited by space and space and can reach
a large number of students at the same time. Second, the media
with limited coverage by space and space. This medium is deep
its use requires a special space and place such as
films, sound slides, film sequences, which must use the place
closed and dark.
According to Pupuh Fathurrohman and Sobry Sutikno, “if seen
media is divided into the first,
simple media, namely media with easy basic ingredients
obtained cheaply, how to make it easy, and
its use is not difficult. Second, complex media, namely media
with materials that are hard to come by, the tools are not cheap and made
relatively expensive price "
From the explanation described, conclusions can be drawn, namely
the kinds of media are divided into 3 kinds, while being seen
from coverage, the media is divided into 2 (two). On audio media
visuals are divided into 2 types, namely pure visual and audio media
Impure visual audiences. And in the division of types, audio meia
The visuals are better than both types of media.
In this media it is more complete, which can be seen and heard,
so that this type of media is expected to be more precise with
the process of teaching and learning activities.
4. What are technologies for learning?
Educational media and tools can be used to:
Task structuring support: help with how to perform tasks (procedures and processes),
Access to knowledge base (helps users find the information needed)
Alternative forms of knowledge representation (some representations of knowledge, for example video, audio, text, images, data)
Technologies currently in use: digital cameras, video cameras, document cameras, electronic media, and LCD projectors. The combination of these techniques includes blogs, collaborative software, ePortfolios, and virtual classrooms. The next learning technology media are audio and video. Audio and Video learning methods can be exemplified as when we stream lesson material from learning video sites. Where there we will get an explanation of the material online, or also offline using a CD / DVD cassette.
Video can also use webcam and webcasting features which have made it possible to create virtual classrooms and virtual learning environments. The next learning technology media is through computers, tablets and cellphones. Collaborative learning is a group-based learning approach in which students work together and interact with each other.
